If you’ve ever been on an Outward Bound expedition, you’ve seen in action how shared challenges, adversity, failure and success help our students discover and develop new skills, confidence and passion. Again and again over the past year and a half, we’ve seen huge challenges at a global level, and even more recently as our Mazama basecamp navigated evacuation warnings due to wildfires, we at NWOBS have navigated more adversity. Of course, many of the challenges encountered on our courses are planned for, but those same skills our courses allow people to learn for overcoming adversity and the confidence we are able to build has translated for so many of us in the face of challenges that are, largely, outside of our control.
Now, as ever, we aim to focus on how we are able to grow from these challenges we face, which helps us turn adversity into an opportunity. With that in mind, this month, we are diving into some tips for overcoming challenges:
- Embrace hard times as opportunities to grow. While it may not be an ideal situation, shifting your view of the situation can allow you to take the most out of this adversity.
- Where possible both during and in between life’s challenges, you need time to recover. Give yourself that space and encourage others to as well.
- Objectively examine the opportunity for hidden lessons about yourself and your situation. Taking a step back from the situation can help you evaluate a piece of yourself that you haven’t before.
With these in mind, we hope that you’ll be able to dig into your NWOBS roots and embrace adversity as an opportunity to grow.
